Residents of Krasnodar state mass fish mortality in Lakes Karasun

Mass fish mortality is observed in Lakes Karasun in Krasnodar: the waters adjacent to Tramvainaya, Oktiabrskaya and Borodinskaya Streets are notable for an unbearable smell, locals report to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. They associate the accident with the treatment of the lakes against mosquitoes. However, ecologists suggest other reasons.

Tatiana Reshetnikova, a resident of the neighbourhood Pashkovskiy in Krasnodar, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that a few days ago, when she was walking along the shore of one of Lakes Karasun, she felt an unpleasant smell. Having approached the water, the woman saw plenty of dead fishes afloat.

According to Anatoly Kalchurin, who lives in Tramvainaya Street, two weeks ago some specialists in protective clothing treated Lakes Karasun against mosquitoes.

"The treated reeds and water surface with some chemical solution; we feared to walk on the shore for several days; some chemical smell was felt' and then fishes began dying," said Anatoly Kalchurin.

According to activists of the "Ecological Watch for Northern Caucasus" (EcoWatch), who inspected the water bodies, fishes died in four lakes; most probably, it is not associated with any local discharge of harmful substances. Activists of the "EcoWatch" took water samples and sent them for analysis, the results of which are expected by the end of the week.
