The historical events that took place in Sochi, the last capital of Circassia, reveal so much to the Circassian people.
That historic day was a turning point in the course of 101-years of struggle for freedom and independence.
On that day the delegates from 12 regions of Circassia gathered to establish the Grand Assembly and, announced the opening of an independent legislative body representing the Circassian nation.
That body was later known as the Free Assembly of Circassia.
These legislative and executive organs, forged by the Circassian nation itself, served as the basis of a legitimate government.
This enormous step unified the Circassian communities, that have hitherto inhabited the land of Circassia separately.
Unfortunately, the Assembly proved to be short-lived, surviving almost three years, from June 1861 to May 1864.
We celebrate 13 June as the Day of Free Assembly of Circassia and Circassian National Unity.
