Eco Council of Sochi demands to put city under ecological emergency situation

This appeal was addressed on 02 February to the leadership of the country and the region by Vladimir Ostapuk, the leader of the Environmental Council under the Mayor of Sochi. He stated that in preparation for the Winter Olympic Games, 20 species of insect pests were brought into the city; they are now destroying green areas of the city-resort.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that after the Olympic Games, held in February 2014 in Sochi, ecologists paid attention to the spread in insect pests, which had not been detected in Western Caucasus earlier.

Letters with a demand to pay attention to the spread of the above pests in Sochi were sent today by Vladimir Ostapuk to the Russian presidential administration, the administration of the KrasnodarTerritory and to the Mayor of Sochi.

"At the moment, the situation is so dramatic that if it is not reported to the top level, we have a risk to irretrievably lose the Sochi-resort", Vladimir Ostapuk told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his estimates, the cost of respective treatment of boxwood groves and woodlands will make more than 500 million roubles.
