Every year on May 21, the Circassian people mark the day of mourning and remembrance for the Circassian genocide. A war imposed by the Russian Empire on the state of Circassia lasted for about 101 years - from 1763 to 1864, at the end of which the Russian Empire conquered the entire territory of Circassia and deported the majority of the Circassian people to the Middle East. Before the occupation of Circassia, over two million people lived there, after the occupation less than 50 thousand people remained there. Half of the Circassian people were killed during the war and during the deportation.
Events to mark this day are held in the Circassian homeland (Caucasus): in the Republic of Adygea, in the Republic of Karashay-Circassia, in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, in the Krasnodar Region, in the Stavropol Region and in Shapsugia of the black sea.
Events to mark this day are held in the Circassian diaspora: in Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Israel, European countries, Australia, the United States and other countries.
