Kase Kik, Chairman of the International Circassian Political Committee (ICPC), attended an international meeting held at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations in New York. The meeting focused on human rights violations and the challenges facing nations and Indigenous peoples living under Russian rule.
On August 24, 2026, Chairman Kase Kik was joined by Marianna Sheru of the Circassian Center in New York, representing the Circassian national movement at the meeting.
Michał Miarka, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations and Minister Plenipotentiary, delivered remarks at the meeting. His participation underscored Poland’s interest in human rights issues and in the challenges confronting nations and Indigenous peoples living under Russian rule.
During the event, Chairman Kik also met with Sebastian Kurek, Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations in New York. Kurek works on matters related to the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, which addresses social, humanitarian and cultural affairs. His areas of responsibility include human rights, the rights of older persons, democratization and social affairs. Their meeting provided an opportunity to establish direct contact and discuss issues of mutual interest.
During the nearly four-hour meeting, representatives of different nations and political movements discussed the conditions facing their peoples, opportunities for international cooperation and possible areas of joint action. The meeting also provided an important platform for building direct contacts and strengthening relations among movements committed to freedom, human rights and national self-determination.
The Circassian representatives drew attention to the historical and contemporary dimensions of the Circassian question, including the consequences of the Circassian Genocide and forced exile, the continuing division of the Circassian homeland, threats to the Circassian language and national identity, and the need for the Circassian people’s rights to receive greater international recognition.
A detailed report prepared by the ICPC on human rights violations targeting Circassians and other Indigenous peoples in Russia was formally presented to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations in New York. The report documents the historical and contemporary pressures confronting these peoples and calls for greater international attention to their situation.
The Polish Mission was also briefed on the case of Nurdin Karaf, a Circassian man who died under suspicious circumstances earlier this month. Information was provided regarding the conduct of Russian security forces in connection with the case and the authorities’ continued refusal to return Karaf’s body to his family.
Beyond the formal discussions, the meeting created opportunities for representatives of different peoples to exchange experiences, identify shared concerns and establish the foundations for longer-term cooperation. Such international meetings are particularly important for nations whose voices remain underrepresented within major global institutions.
The ICPC regards the meeting not as an isolated event, but as part of a broader and sustained effort to bring the Circassian question more prominently onto the international agenda. Establishing lasting relationships with supportive states, international institutions and representatives of other nations is essential to ensuring that the Circassian people’s voice is heard wherever decisions concerning human rights, security and the future of the Caucasus are made.
Chairman Kase Kik and Marianna Sheru expressed their sincere appreciation to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations for its warm hospitality and attention to the Circassian question.
Special gratitude was also extended to Victoria Molodayeva, a leading representative of the Buryat national movement, whose initiative and efforts made a significant contribution to organizing the meeting and bringing together representatives of different nations.
The meeting coincided with Ukraine’s Independence Day. Participants acknowledged the significance of Ukraine’s continuing struggle for freedom, sovereignty and national independence.
The ICPC will continue working to inform the international community about the Circassian people, their history, their national rights and their commitment to the restoration of historical justice.
